Solo/Ensemble Recorder Music

Throughout his musical career, David Moses has written songs, instrumental compositions and arrangements for the various jazz, folk, rock and popular music projects with which he has been involved. His enthusiasm for solo and ensemble recorder playing has given rise to compositions which reflect the historical and geographical breadth of his passion for music.

Five strong colours (2003)

an extended piece for descant recorder and piano, which encourages Grade III or IV players to explore the more lyrical and emotional aspects of their instrument through the five contrasted pieces which make up this suite. The first movement was selected by Trinity College of Music as a Grade III examination piece.

Three Piece Suite (1996)

a suite in three movements for rather more advanced players (the first movement was selected by Trinity College of Music as a Grade V examination piece), it utilises the whole range of the descant recorder and, like the more recent work, contains plenty of rhythmic challenges for both instruments.

Rigs, Jigs and Reels (revised 2009)

is an arrangement in three movements of Irish traditional music for recorder orchestra (sopranino, descant 1 & 2, treble 1 & 2, tenor 1 & 2, bass 1 & 2, great bass, contra bass). Written for the first London recorder orchestra and performed more recently by the National Youth Recorder Orchestra, the piece lasts for approximately fifteen minutes with lively jigs, reels and hornpipes weaving in and out of beautiful ballads and laments.

Milonga, Songo and Samba for recorder orchestra and massed feet (sopranino, descant 1 & 2, treble 1 & 2, tenor 1 & 2, bass 1 & 2, great bass, contra bass). Gladiolus Rag by Scott Joplin 11part

Arranged for recorder orchestra (sopranino, descant 1 & 2, treble 1 & 2, tenor 1 & 2, bass 1 & 2, great bass, contra bass) by David Moses. Joplin at his most refined and melodic. Surely one of the most attractive of all his ragtime compositions.

A reworking of the 2003 suite for recorder orchestra (sopranino, descant 1 & 2, treble 1 & 2, tenor 1 & 2, bass 1 & 2, great bass, contra bass and massed feet). Lush harmonies and poignant melodies intermingle with wild and jaunty dance tunes to evoke the earlier part of the 20th century.

Gladiolus Rag by Scott Joplin 10 part

Rearranged in ten parts without contra bass (sopranino, descant 1 & 2, treble 1 & 2, tenor 1 & 2, bass 1 & 2, great bass) by David Moses. Joplin at his most refined and melodic. Surely one of the most attractive of all his ragtime compositions.
